Fish as sentient beings
On 24 September 2024, a meeting of the Standing Subcommittee on Farm Animal Welfare and the Protection of Animal Production in Poland and the Control of Infectious Animal Diseases was held. The main topic of the meeting was fish welfare.
Prof Andrzej Elżanowski, member of the Expert Council of the Green REV Institute, spoke at the meeting on behalf of the Green REV Institute.
Prof Andrzej Elżanowski: ‘It seemed that this discussion on the perception of pain in fish has long since passed, and is generally recognised by the European Food Safety Agency. (…) We have very serious scientific evidence that bony fish have not only nociceptors, instead that these impulses from the nociceptors, the negative impulses, reach the brain and include stimulation of the whole brain.’
