A few weeks ago, we appealed to the European Commission, along with the Spanish Vegetarian Union and other NGOs, to withdraw approval of insects as a consumer food product in the EU. Unfortunately, the response from European Union authorities is not only disappointing, but also disturbing. Among other things, the Commission states that there is a lack of knowledge and research on the effects on human health, of feeling pain from insects. Unfortunately, the response is also disappointing regarding the marketing of cultured products, which are undoubtedly not in line with the ambitions of the From Field to Table strategy.
A just transition must not be based on supporting more farms and ranches but on moving away from livestock production, insect production and towards sustainable plant-based food systems, and this is what we will continue to call on EU authorities to do.
