The European Parliament’s motion for a resolution on the health and lives of people living near factory farms has been referred to the ENVI Committee (Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety). This is a landmark moment as the motion addresses the impact of the operation of factory farms on people’s lives.

As part of the motion, the European Parliament called on the European Commission to:

– to update EU legislation on: the distance of farms from places of human life and activity and the concentration of farms;

– to strengthen control of the implementation and application of the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC and Directive 91/676/EEC concerning the protection of waters against pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources in the Member States;

– to propose an amendment to Directive 2016/2284 on the reduction of national emissions of certain atmospheric pollutants to establish emission reduction targets, including for ammonia produced by farms, necessary to guarantee the right to health, a clean environment and family life.

The draft resolution on which Dr Sylwia Spurek MEP and her team worked was supported by 8 MEPs: Martin Buschmann, Ignazio Corrao, Malte Gallee, Francisco Guerreiro, Anja Hazekamp, Katrin Langensiepen, Jiri Pospisil, Eugenia Rodriguez Palop.
