New report – Public procurements
A new report entitled ’Plant-based sustainable public procurements – best practices’ presented by the European Vegetarian Union (EVU) presents a list of best practices for public procurement in Europe. The report shows that plant-based meals are more cost-effective and have a lower environmental impact.
The report is also a collection of good practices from different European countries and cities – Portugal, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Finland and France.
The report shows that replacing meat dishes with vegetarian food options can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30%. An example of the positive impact of such a change can be found at the University of Florence in Italy, where the introduction of plant-based meals on campus for one week resulted in a 60% reduction in carbon footprint and a 20% reduction in water consumption compared to a menu containing meat.
