Animal production vs. water crisis
Today, 10 July, the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) takes place in New York, where world leaders will address the impact of animal agriculture on the water crisis.
The meeting is centred around the theme of Sustainable Development including Sustainable Development Goal 6 „Clean Water and Sanitation”. UN member states will discuss the undeniable impact of animal agriculture on the worsening water pollution crisis of the current agricultural sector. This problem has already been highlighted in the 2017 Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) report.
Moving away from animal-based food and towards sustainable, plant-based food is a significant step towards dealing with the growing water crisis. Animal agriculture is not only generating tonnes of manure and waste, it is also lowering oxygen levels in waters, killing fish and other sea creatures.
