Broken promises by the European Commission
13 September 2023 and the speech of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, was a moment of disappointment and surprise for NGOs that are fighting for the transition of the food system and the revision of legislation for so-called farm animals. The President referred in her State of the Union address (State of the Union #SOTEU), to the expectations of the agro-industry lobby and omitted the promised changes in legislation, the presentation of a draft law for a sustainable food system. The time for waiting for the green promises of the EU authorities to be fulfilled is over. Business as usual remained on the EU table.
On 3 December 2023, organisations from Europe (Eurogroup for Animals, BEUC, EPHA and EEB,) uncharacteristically called on the European Commission and Ursula von der Leyen to deliver on their promises for legislation for a sustainable food system by displaying the sign „Broken promises” on the Commission’s headquarters.
On 6 December on Twitter, during the President’s speech at the EU Agri – Food Days conference, REV, together with other NGOs, reminds the European Commission again of the broken promises to fix the food system.
