This year’s COP29 Climate Summit will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan from 11-22 November 2024. On 17 July, COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev conveyed in a letter to Parties and Actors that one of the themes of the Summit will be the food system. The letter announced that the day of 19 November at COP29 would be dedicated to food, agriculture and water.

As a reminder, last year’s COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai was unique in that, for the first time ever, a day was designated entirely dedicated to food. However, voices are already being raised indicating that the topic of food system transformation, despite being on the agenda, may be dominated by climate finance.

The president of COP29, who also serves as Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Republic of Azerbaijan, stresses that this year’s Summit will focus on climate finance targeting sectors and developing countries where agriculture is the dominant source of livelihoods and is exposed to numerous risks.
