November is the month of hearings for candidates and nominees for EU Commissioners. Luxembourg politician from the European People’s Party Christophe Hansen may become Commissioner for Agriculture and Food. However, we do not know whether and to what extent he will support draft legislation for a sustainable food system. Although the proposal was supposed to be presented in September 2023, the EC 2019-2024 has not presented a draft, and Hansen did not answer questions on the sustainable food system during the candidate hearings. Unless the EU decides on a framework legislation for the right to healthy food, inequalities between EU countries will increase, and access to sustainable food from local suppliers will be a privilege. We call for legislation for good food in the EU.
