EC plans – no change to food system

On the 11th of February, the European Commission presented its work programme for 2025. The European Commission’s work programme for 2025 shows that transforming the food system and agriculture is not a political priority. While a strategy for the future of agriculture and action on water management are announced, any ambitious reforms on reducing emissions from animal agriculture, reducing antibiotics or supporting a more plant-based food system are missing. The Commission promises simplified procedures for farmers, but does not address the need for a systemic change in the food production model.
Without concrete regulations to reduce factory farming, support plant-based proteins and eliminate greenwashing in the food sector, there can be no question of building a healthy and sustainable food system. The Commission continues to shy away from confronting the lobby, instead of directing policy towards the real changes that are needed in the context of the EU’s climate and health crisis.
2025 will not bring a breakthrough – it is a year of stagnation in EU food policy. The lack of legislation to reduce the environmental impact of agriculture shows that the Commission does not intend to take the difficult but necessary decisions.
