Water, health and the climate crisis

The European Environment Agency’s report 'Responding to climate change impacts on human health in Europe: focus on floods, droughts and water quality’ clearly indicates that the climate crisis will be a growing threat to people’s lives and our future.

In recent years, Europe has been struggling with extreme weather events such as intense rainfall and prolonged droughts. At the same time, a health crisis is worsening, including a mental health crisis. As many as 30 per cent of Southern Europeans are at risk of water scarcity, while floods in Europe have claimed the lives of more than 5,000 people between 1980 and 2022.
